US Bank Holidays 2026 and 2027: Federal Reserve Schedule

US banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule: 11 bank holidays a year. The next United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holiday is Veterans Day on , 20 days from today. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Fed stays open the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, the Fed closes the Monday after.

  • How many bank holidays this year? 11 on the Fed calendar. In 2026, 10 of them close banks on a weekday (July 4 is a Saturday). In 2027, only 9 do, because Juneteenth (June 19) and Christmas (December 25) fall on Saturdays.
  • Bank business days in 2026: 251. In 2027: 252.
  • Not bank holidays: Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Good Friday. The Fed is open on all four.

Today is Thursday, October 22, 2026. Count bank business days between any two dates with the business days calculator.

The Saturday rule: why banks are open when federal offices are closed

The Federal Reserve and the federal government observe the same 11 holidays, but they treat weekend holidays differently. The Fed’s rule, from its published holiday schedule:

  • Holiday on a Saturday: Federal Reserve Banks and Branches are open the Friday before. Only the Board of Governors in Washington closes that Friday.
  • Holiday on a Sunday: all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday.

Federal offices (OPM) close the Friday before a Saturday holiday. So on those Fridays, federal employees are off but the Fed processes payments and banks are open. This happens three times in 2027; the July 5 row shows a Sunday holiday for comparison:

Checked against our calendar engine: Yes. is a business day for United States (Federal Reserve and banks). No. is not a business day for United States (Federal Reserve and banks): Independence Day (observed), for the holiday on .

Because of this rule, the Fed has more business days than the federal government in a year with Saturday holidays: 252 bank business days in 2027 against 249 federal business days. The full federal list is on our US federal holidays 2025–2030 page.

What happens to ACH, Fedwire and direct deposit on a bank holiday

  • FedACH (direct deposit, payroll, bill pay, most transfers between banks) does not settle on a Fed holiday. The Fed’s FedACH schedule stops processing the night before a holiday and resumes in the evening of the holiday, so payments settle on the next business day.
  • Fedwire (wire transfers) follows the same Fed holiday calendar, so a wire sent on a bank holiday goes out on the next business day.
  • Direct deposit on a holiday: if payday falls on a bank holiday, many employers send the money a business day early. Others pay the next business day. Your employer or payroll provider decides.
  • Cards, ATMs and online banking keep working, but deposits and transfers made that day usually post on the next business day.
  • Saturday-rule Fridays (such as Fri Jun 18, 2027) are normal ACH and Fedwire business days, even though federal offices are closed.

Days that are not bank holidays

These days feel like holidays, but they are not on the Federal Reserve’s list. The Fed is open and banks usually are too, though some branches close early.

  • Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving): a normal bank business day.
  • Christmas Eve: not a bank holiday. Yes. is a business day for United States (Federal Reserve and banks). In 2027, December 24 is the federal observed Christmas holiday, but the Fed stays open under the Saturday rule.
  • New Year’s Eve: not a bank holiday. Yes. is a business day for United States (Federal Reserve and banks).
  • Good Friday: banks and the Fed are open, but the stock market is closed (see the stock market holiday schedule).

Are banks open on each holiday?

Banks are generally closed on Sundays, and Saturday hours vary by bank. See is Saturday a business day? for how weekends count.

Bank holiday questions

How many bank holidays are there in a year?

The Federal Reserve observes 11 holidays every year. The number of weekday closures depends on the calendar: 10 in 2026 and 9 in 2027, because Saturday holidays do not move to Friday for the Fed.

Are banks closed when a holiday falls on a Saturday?

No weekday closure. The Federal Reserve Banks are open the Friday before, so most banks are open too. Federal offices still close that Friday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the Fed and most banks close on Monday.

Are banks closed on Juneteenth 2027?

No. Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19, 2027. Federal offices observe it on Friday, June 18, but the Federal Reserve Banks and most banks are open that Friday.

Is Christmas Eve a bank holiday?

No. Christmas Eve is not on the Federal Reserve’s holiday list. Many branches close early. In 2027, Friday, December 24 is the federal observed Christmas holiday, but the Fed is open under the Saturday rule.

Do all banks follow the Federal Reserve schedule?

Most do, because they cannot settle ACH or wire payments when the Fed is closed. A bank can still choose to open branches on a Fed holiday or close on another day, so check your own bank’s holiday hours.
