The New Year’s Day that the markets skip
Most years New Year’s Day is simple: everything closes. 2028 is one of the exceptions, and it catches people out because each institution handles a Saturday holiday its own way.
- Federal offices move a Saturday holiday to the Friday before. OPM lists New Year’s Day 2028 as Friday, December 31, 2027.
- The Federal Reserve keeps its Reserve Banks open. Its schedule says that for a Saturday holiday “Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday; however, the Board of Governors will be closed”, and it lists December 31, 2027.
- The NYSE would normally close the Friday before, but not when that Friday ends a monthly or yearly accounting period, as December 31 does. Its calendar shows no New Year’s Day holiday at all for 2028.
So the next New Year’s weekday off for banks after January 1, 2027 is Monday, January 1, 2029. If you run payroll or schedule payments, treat December 31, 2027 as a normal bank business day.
When does money arrive around New Year’s Day?
Nothing settles through the Fed on a weekday New Year’s Day. Payments and deposits sent on January 1 are processed on the next business day, and a payday that falls on January 1 is usually moved to the business day before. For example, a Friday payroll due on January 1, 2027 is normally paid on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Your employer sets the exact date.
- Last bank business day before New Year’s Day: 1 business day before is , excluding United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holidays.
- Next bank business day after New Year’s Day: 1 business day after is , excluding United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holidays.
A check or mobile deposit you make on New Year’s Day is treated as received on the next business day. To count a deadline in business days past the holiday, use the business days calculator or find the date a number of business days from today.
