New Year’s Eve 2028 (Sunday)

Why December 31, 2027 splits the calendar

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before off. That is the rule in OPM’s federal holiday list, which shows New Year’s Day 2028 as Friday, December 31, 2027.

The Federal Reserve handles it differently. Its holiday schedule says: “For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday; however, the Board of Governors will be closed.” It lists December 31, 2027 as one of those Fridays. So FedACH and Fedwire run, and banks that follow the Fed are open.

The NYSE normally closes on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, but not when that Friday ends a monthly or yearly accounting period, and December 31 ends both. Its calendar lists no New Year’s Day holiday for 2028, so the market trades on December 31, 2027. The result is a day when a federal office, a passport agency or a court may be shut while your bank, your payroll and the stock market are working.

Direct deposit and payday at the turn of the year

New Year’s Eve is a Fed business day, so ACH payments and direct deposits settle on December 31. New Year’s Day is not (when it falls on a weekday), so a payday that lands on January 1 is usually moved to the business day before, which is December 31. For example, January 1, 2027 is a Friday and a Fed holiday, so a Friday payroll is normally paid on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Your employer decides the exact date.

  • Last bank business day of the year: 1 business day before is , excluding United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holidays.
  • First bank business day of the new year: 1 business day after is , excluding United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holidays.

Checks and mobile deposits made after your bank’s cut-off on December 31 are usually credited on the next business day. To count business days across New Year, use the business days calculator or see how many business days are left this year.

Is there mail on New Year’s Eve?

Yes. USPS treats December 31 as a normal day: post offices are open and mail is delivered (USPS confirmed this for December 31, 2025). There is no regular mail on New Year’s Day. Local hours vary, so check usps.com. UPS and FedEx set their own holiday schedules; check the UPS and FedEx sites for New Year’s Eve pickup times.

Is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve?

Yes, for a full trading day in both 2026 and 2027, according to the NYSE. The bond market is different: SIFMA recommends a 2:00 pm ET early close on Thursday, December 31, 2026. See all stock market holidays for the year.
