Good Friday: markets closed, banks open
Good Friday is the one stock market holiday that is not a federal holiday. Banks, the Federal Reserve, the post office and federal offices all work as usual, but the NYSE and Nasdaq do not trade. Next Good Friday: No. is not a business day for NYSE and Nasdaq (stock market): Good Friday. For banks the same day: Yes. is a business day for United States (Federal Reserve and banks).
The reverse happens on Columbus Day and Veterans Day: banks and the bond market close, but the stock market is open. Yes. is a business day for NYSE and Nasdaq (stock market).
Weekend holidays: the Saturday and Sunday rules
The NYSE’s rule for holidays that fall on a weekend:
- Holiday on a Sunday: the market closes the Monday after.
- Holiday on a Saturday: the market closes the Friday before, unless that Friday ends a monthly or yearly accounting period. Then the holiday is not observed at all.
This is why the stock market and the banks part ways in 2027. Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) and Christmas (Saturday, December 25) close the NYSE on the Friday before, while the Federal Reserve and most banks stay open on those Fridays. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday too, but Friday, December 31, 2027 ends the year, so the market trades that day and there is no New Year’s holiday in 2028.
| Date | Holiday | NYSE and Nasdaq | Fed and most banks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri Jun 18, 2027 | Juneteenth (Sat Jun 19) | Closed | Open |
| Mon Jul 5, 2027 | Independence Day (Sun Jul 4) | Closed | Closed |

| Fri Dec 31, 2027 | New Year’s Day 2028 (Sat Jan 1) | Open (year-end exception) | Open |
Checked against our calendar engine: No. is not a business day for NYSE and Nasdaq (stock market): Juneteenth National Independence Day (observed), for the holiday on . Yes. is a business day for NYSE and Nasdaq (stock market).
Early closes at 1:00 pm
On an early-close day, the NYSE and Nasdaq stop regular trading at 1:00 pm Eastern (eligible options at 1:15 pm). The usual early closes are:
- The day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), every year. Next one: Yes. is a business day for NYSE and Nasdaq (stock market), with an early close at 1:00 pm ET (Day after Thanksgiving Day).
- Christmas Eve, when it falls on a weekday that is not itself a holiday, as on Thursday, December 24, 2026.
- The day before Independence Day, in some years, such as Monday, July 3, 2028.
New Year’s Eve is a normal full trading day. An early close still counts as a trading day and a business day for settlement.
The bond market follows a different calendar
US bond trading has no exchange. Dealers follow the holiday recommendations of SIFMA, the securities industry association, and those differ from the NYSE in three ways:
- Columbus Day and Veterans Day: SIFMA recommends a full close; the stock market is open.
- Early closes at 2:00 pm Eastern before many holidays, including the Friday before Memorial Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
- Good Friday is decided year by year; SIFMA sometimes recommends a short session instead of a full close.
SIFMA publishes its recommendations a year or so ahead, so check sifma.org for the current list before planning bond trades or settlement around a holiday.

Counting trading days and settlement dates
US stock trades settle one business day after the trade (T+1). A market holiday is not a settlement day, so a trade on the day before a holiday settles the day after it. To count trading days between two dates, choose the US stock market (NYSE) calendar in the business days calculator; for a date a set number of trading days ahead, use the business days from today tool with the same calendar.
