Federal Holidays 2027 (and 2025 to 2030): Dates and Observed Days

The dates on this page follow the federal holiday rules published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (opm.gov federal holidays), last checked on October 21, 2026. They apply to federal employees and federal offices. Banks, the stock market and private employers set their own schedules, which mostly match but differ on a few days (see below).

Federal holidays 2027

The table shows the day federal offices are closed. Where that differs from the calendar date, the note gives the actual date.

The table has 12 rows because the observed New Year’s Day 2028 falls inside 2027. Federal offices are closed on all 12 days. The 2028 table below has 10 rows for the same reason.

How many federal holidays are there?

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) sets 11 federal holidays every year:

1. New Year’s Day, January 1
2. Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., third Monday in January
3. Washington’s Birthday (often called Presidents’ Day), third Monday in February
4. Memorial Day, last Monday in May
5. Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19
6. Independence Day, July 4
7. Labor Day, first Monday in September
8. Columbus Day, second Monday in October
9. Veterans Day, November 11
10. Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November
11. Christmas Day, December 25

Six of these always fall on a Monday or Thursday. The five with a fixed date (New Year’s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Christmas) can land on a weekend, which is when the observed-day rules apply. Inauguration Day is an extra holiday only for federal employees in the Washington, D.C. area, so it is not in these tables. The President can also close federal offices by executive order, as happened in 2025.

Observed holiday rules: Saturday and Sunday

• Holiday on a Saturday: federal employees get the Friday before off.
• Holiday on a Sunday: federal employees get the Monday after off.

In 2027 that moves four days: Juneteenth (Saturday June 19) to Friday June 18, Independence Day (Sunday July 4) to Monday July 5, Christmas (Saturday December 25) to Friday December 24, and New Year’s Day 2028 (Saturday January 1) to Friday December 31, 2027. Banks and the Federal Reserve: the Saturday difference

Most banks follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule, not OPM’s. The two calendars agree on Sunday holidays but not on Saturday ones. According to the Federal Reserve Financial Services holiday schedule, when a holiday falls on a Saturday the Federal Reserve Banks and branches are open the Friday before (the Board of Governors in Washington is closed that day), and when it falls on a Sunday they are closed the Monday after.

So on Friday June 18, Friday December 24 and Friday December 31, 2027, federal offices are closed but the Federal Reserve Banks, FedACH, Fedwire and most banks are open. On Monday July 5, 2027, both federal offices and banks are closed. Here is the 2027 schedule for the Fed and banks:

Stock market and post office in 2027

The NYSE and Nasdaq close for nine of the federal holidays (not Columbus Day or Veterans Day) and also close on Good Friday, Friday March 26, 2027, when banks are open. In 2027 the NYSE is closed on Friday June 18 and Friday December 24, like federal offices, but open on Friday December 31, 2027: per nyse.com, no New Year’s Day holiday is observed for Saturday January 1, 2028. The only scheduled 2027 early close is 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday November 26, the day after Thanksgiving.

The US Postal Service closes post offices and stops regular mail delivery on federal holidays. USPS has not yet published how it handles the 2027 Saturday holidays, so check about.usps.com before Friday June 18 and Friday December 24, 2027.

Juneteenth: a federal holiday since 2021

Juneteenth National Independence Day became the 11th federal holiday when the President signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021. June 19, 2021 was a Saturday, so the first federal observance was Friday June 18, 2021. It is the newest federal holiday; the one before it, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, was first observed in 1986. In 2027 Juneteenth again falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday June 18.

Federal business days per year, 2025 to 2030

Federal business days are Monday to Friday minus the days federal offices are closed for holidays. Every date from January 1 to December 31 is counted.

Federal holidays 2026

In 2026 only Independence Day moves: July 4 is a Saturday, so federal offices close on Friday July 3.

Federal holidays 2028

New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on Friday December 31, 2027, so the 2028 list starts with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Veterans Day (Saturday November 11) is observed on Friday November 10.

2025 had extra closures by executive order on top of the 11 holidays: a national day of mourning for President Jimmy Carter on January 9, and December 24 and 26 around Christmas.

How many federal holidays are there in 2027?

Which federal holidays fall on a weekend in 2027?

Are banks open on Friday December 24, 2027?

Most are. Christmas falls on a Saturday, and the Federal Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before a Saturday holiday, so most banks open as normal. Federal offices are closed. Check your own bank’s hours.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a federal holiday?

Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday?

Not by law. It becomes a day off for federal employees only if the President closes offices by executive order, as happened on December 24, 2025. In 2027 federal offices are closed on December 24 anyway, as the observed Christmas Day.
