Banks open, stock market closed: why Good Friday is different

Good Friday is the one day of the year when the US stock market closes but banks and the federal government work a normal day. Every other NYSE holiday is also a federal holiday. The reason is history: Good Friday has never been one of the 11 federal holidays set by Congress, while the NYSE has kept it as an exchange holiday for generations.

  • Bank transfers, ACH and direct deposit run normally, because the Fed’s payment systems are open. A payday on Good Friday is paid on Good Friday.
  • Stock and ETF orders placed on Good Friday wait until the market opens on Monday.
  • Bonds follow SIFMA, whose advice changes by year: a full close in 2027, but only a noon early close in 2026.

Veterans Day and Columbus Day are the reverse: banks and the bond market close while stocks trade. The full exchange calendar is on our stock market holidays page.

Is Good Friday a business day?
