How these countdowns are counted
- Days and weeks are calendar time from today to the date, weekends included.
- Business days start tomorrow and stop the day before the date. The end-of-year and end-of-quarter counts are the exception: they include the last day (December 31 or the quarter end), because that day is still a working day. Saturdays, Sundays and US federal holidays (from OPM) are skipped.
- “Today” is the date in US Eastern time, so the numbers roll over at midnight in New York.
- Days off that only some employers give (Black Friday, and Christmas Eve when it is not the observed Christmas holiday) are counted as business days. Subtract them if your workplace is closed. Learn more in calendar days vs business days.
