There are 2,080 working hours in a year for a US full-time employee: 52 weeks × 40 hours. That is the standard figure for salaries and hourly rates. Counting the real calendar, 2026 has 250 US business days, so with federal holidays off and 8-hour days you work 2,000 hours in 2026, 1,992 hours in 2027 and 2,000 hours in 2028.
The exact hours for each year are in the table below, and the tool works out your own number for any year from 2025 to 2030, any region, any day length and any amount of paid time off (PTO). The day counts come from the same holiday data as the business days calculator.
Working hours in a year, 2025 to 2030 (US)
| Year | Weekdays | US business days | Hours, holidays off (8 h/day) | Hours, all weekdays paid (8 h/day) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 261 | 247 | 1,976 | 2,088 |
| 2026 | 261 | 250 | 2,000 | 2,088 |
| 2027 | 261 | 249 | 1,992 | 2,088 |
| 2028 | 260 | 250 | 2,000 | 2,080 |
| 2029 | 261 | 250 | 2,000 | 2,088 |
| 2030 | 261 | 250 | 2,000 | 2,088 |
Why 2,088 and not 2,080? A year is 52 weeks plus one day (two in a leap year), so most years have 261 weekdays, not 260. 261 × 8 = 2,088. The federal government averages this out: OPM divides annual federal salaries by 2,087 hours, the average length of a work year over a 28-year calendar cycle. Most private employers simply use 2,080.

Working hours with and without holidays and PTO
2,080 is paid hours. It counts holidays and vacation as if you worked them. To get the hours you actually work, take out the days you are off:
| Starting from 2,080 hours (40 h/week) | Days off | Hours worked |
|---|---|---|
| No time off | 0 | 2,080 |
| 11 federal holidays | 11 | 1,992 |
| 11 holidays + 10 PTO days | 21 | 1,912 |
| 11 holidays + 15 PTO days | 26 | 1,872 |
| 11 holidays + 20 PTO days | 31 | 1,832 |
US law does not require paid vacation or paid holidays in the private sector (Department of Labor), so the number of days off depends on your employer. To see how much PTO you build up over a year, use the PTO calculator, then enter the days in the tool above.
Part-time working hours per year
Multiply your weekly hours by 52:
| Hours per week | Hours per year (× 52) | Typical schedule |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | 780 | 3 days × 5 hours |
| 20 | 1,040 | 5 days × 4 hours |
| 24 | 1,248 | 3 days × 8 hours |
| 30 | 1,560 | 5 days × 6 hours |
| 32 | 1,664 | 4 days × 8 hours |
| 35 | 1,820 | 5 days × 7 hours |
| 37.5 | 1,950 | 5 days × 7.5 hours |
| 40 | 2,080 | 5 days × 8 hours |
For the calendar answer on a part-time schedule, enter your daily hours in the tool above and multiply the result by the share of weekdays you work: 0.6 for three days a week, 0.8 for four.
Working hours in a year in the UK
A common UK full-time week is 37.5 hours (7.5 hours a day), which gives 1,950 hours a year (37.5 × 52). Counting the calendar, England and Wales have 253 working days in 2026 after the bank holidays; at 7.5 hours a day that is 1,897.5 hours in most years (table below).
| Year | Working days (England and Wales) | Hours at 7.5 h/day | Hours at 8 h/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 253 | 1,897.5 | 2,024 |
| 2026 | 253 | 1,897.5 | 2,024 |
| 2027 | 253 | 1,897.5 | 2,024 |
| 2028 | 252 | 1,890 | 2,016 |
| 2029 | 253 | 1,897.5 | 2,024 |
| 2030 | 253 | 1,897.5 | 2,024 |
Most UK full-time workers are also entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday, which is 28 days on a five-day week, and employers may count bank holidays as part of it (gov.uk holiday entitlement). If the 28 days include the bank holidays, a 261-weekday year leaves 233 days worked, or 1,747.5 hours at 7.5 hours a day. Scotland, Northern Ireland and month-by-month UK figures are on how many working days in the UK.
Hourly rate to annual salary (and back)
- Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080. $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour.
- Annual salary = hourly rate × 2,080. $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.
- Quick estimate: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $30 an hour is about $60,000 (exactly $62,400).
| Annual salary | Hourly (÷ 2,080) | Hourly rate | Annual (× 2,080) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $19.23 | $15 | $31,200 |
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $20 | $41,600 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $25 | $52,000 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $30 | $62,400 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $40 | $83,200 |
If holidays and time off are unpaid (common for contractors), divide by the hours you actually work instead, for example 1,912 hours with 11 holidays and 10 days off. The same salary then works out to a higher hourly rate: $50,000 ÷ 1,912 = $26.15. In the UK, divide by 1,950 for a 37.5-hour week.
How the hours are counted
Working days are Monday to Friday, both January 1 and December 31 included, minus public holidays on their observed weekday (US: the federal holidays published by OPM; UK: the gov.uk bank holidays). Hours are working days × hours per day. Your employer’s own holiday calendar may differ, for example closing on the day after Thanksgiving.
