Presidents’ Day or Washington’s Birthday?

They are the same holiday. In federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) the day is still called Washington’s Birthday, and OPM, the Federal Reserve and the NYSE all list it under that name. “Presidents’ Day” is the popular name, and USPS and SIFMA use it on their schedules. Some states give the day their own name, for example to honor Abraham Lincoln as well, but the federal day off is the same Monday.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732. Since the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect in 1971, the holiday has been the third Monday in February, which always falls between February 15 and February 21. So the federal holiday never lands on Washington’s actual birthday. Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, is not a federal holiday.

Is Presidents’ Day a business day?

No, not for banks or the federal government. Washington’s Birthday is one of the 11 US federal holidays, so a business-day count that uses the federal calendar skips it. No. is not a business day for United States (federal): Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day).

Presidents’ Day is also a big retail sales weekend, so most stores are open and many private offices work as usual. No federal law makes it a paid holiday for private employers. If a contract or bank says “business days”, assume February’s third Monday does not count; if a retailer quotes delivery in business days, ask.

How we count: a business day is a weekday that is not a holiday on the chosen calendar. Weekends never count. Want business days until the holiday? There are 76 business days on the United States (federal) calendar between today and , not counting either day.

Is the post office open on Presidents’ Day?

No. Presidents Day is on the USPS list of holidays with no mail service: there is no regular delivery and post offices are closed. On the published 2026 USPS schedule it was Monday, February 16, 2026. USPS has not yet published its 2027 list; we will confirm Monday, February 15, 2027 when it does. Mail delivery resumes on Tuesday.

  • Mail you drop in a blue collection box over the weekend is collected and moved from Tuesday.
  • UPS and FedEx are private companies with their own holiday schedules. Check the UPS or FedEx holiday schedule before you ship.

For postal holidays all year, see the USPS color coded calendar.

Direct deposit, ACH and checks on Presidents’ Day

  • Next bank business day after Presidents’ Day 2027: 1 business day after is , excluding United States (Federal Reserve and banks) holidays.
  • A payday that falls on the holiday is usually paid on the Friday before or the Tuesday after, depending on your employer.
  • Checks and mobile deposits made over the long weekend are normally treated as received on Tuesday.
  • Card payments, ATMs and online banking keep working; only the settlement waits.
