Is Saturday a Business Day? Banks, USPS, Deadlines and Sunday

No, Saturday is usually not a business day. Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays, so Saturday and Sunday are left out of deadlines, bank processing and “business days” delivery estimates. Saturday can still be a delivery day or an opening day for some branches and stores.

Something that arrives or is due on a Saturday is usually handled on the next business day: Monday, or Tuesday when Monday is a holiday. For the coming weekend: 1 business day after is , excluding United States (federal) holidays. Today: Yes. is a business day for United States (federal). Count any other dates with the business days calculator.

Is a Saturday considered a business day?

Not in the standard sense. A business day is a weekday that is not a public holiday, and Saturday is part of the weekend in the US, the UK, Canada and the other countries our calculator covers. That is the meaning used by most contracts, government forms, banks and online stores when they say “business days”.

The confusion comes from the fact that plenty of things happen on Saturdays. Mail is delivered, shops are open and some bank branches open their doors. None of that makes Saturday a business day; it means some businesses work on a non-business day. The table below shows where Saturday does and does not count.

ACH transfers and check deposits made on a Saturday are processed from the next banking day.

That is why a direct deposit or transfer sent on a Friday evening often lands on Monday, or Tuesday after a Monday bank holiday. Your bank’s app may show a Saturday deposit right away, but its processing date is still the next banking day. The bank holiday calendar is on our US bank holidays page.

Is Saturday a business day for USPS?

For delivery, Saturday works like a normal day: USPS delivers mail and packages on Saturdays. Many post offices are open on Saturday too, usually with shorter hours. So a USPS delivery estimate may include Saturday, while a “business days” estimate from a seller usually doesn’t.

USPS does not deliver regular mail on federal holidays. Our USPS color-coded calendar shows the carrier schedule.

Is Saturday a business day for shipping?

When a store says an order ships or arrives in “3-5 business days”, it almost always means Monday to Friday. A package can still arrive on a Saturday if the carrier delivers that day, but Saturday is not one of the counted days. Saturday delivery depends on the carrier, the service and your area, and some services charge extra for it, so check with the carrier or the seller.

Orders placed on a Saturday are normally processed on the next business day, so the count starts then. More on how sellers and carriers count: What are business days in shipping? and how long 3-5 business days is.

Legal and court deadlines that fall on a Saturday

Many legal deadlines that end on a weekend move to the next business day. In US federal courts, Rule 6(a)(1)(C) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure says that if the last day of a period “is a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the period continues to run until the end of the next day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.”

State courts, agencies, tax authorities and contracts have their own rules, and some count calendar days. This page is general information, not legal advice: for a real deadline, check the rule that applies to it or ask the court clerk or a lawyer.

Is Saturday a working day in the UK?

Not for most purposes. A working day in the UK is generally Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays, and that is how banks, government offices and most deadlines count. In the civil courts of England and Wales, for example, Civil Procedure Rule 2.8 says that in a period of 5 days or less, a Saturday, Sunday, bank holiday, Christmas Day or Good Friday “does not count” (Ministry of Justice).

For employees, Saturday can be a working day if it is one of your contracted days, which is common in retail and hospitality. Royal Mail also delivers letters on Saturdays. The next bank holiday in England and Wales: The next England and Wales holiday is Christmas Day on , 64 days from today. All dates are in our UK bank holidays guide.

Is Sunday a business day?

No. Sunday is not a business day in the US, the UK or Canada, and fewer services run on Sunday than on Saturday. USPS does not deliver regular mail on Sundays, although it delivers some packages, including many Amazon parcels. Banks do not process ACH or wire transfers on Sundays, and a deadline that falls on a Sunday moves to the next business day under the same court rule quoted above.

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the day off usually moves to Monday, so the next business day becomes Tuesday. For US federal holidays the observed-day rule is set by the Office of Personnel Management.

  • The Saturday of Labor Day weekend (): the next business day is .

The next business day after today: 1 business day after is , excluding United States (federal) holidays. Upcoming closures are on the holidays page.
