Canada has 10 federal statutory holidays, but most workers get their province’s list, which has 6 to 11. The next Canada (federal statutory) holiday is Remembrance Day on , 20 days from today. Only New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day are stats almost everywhere.
There is no single national list that applies to every job. The federal list below, set by the Canada Labour Code, covers federally regulated workplaces such as banks, airlines, railways, telecoms, interprovincial trucking and Canada Post. Everyone else follows the employment standards law of their province or territory, compared in the table further down. To count working days between two dates, use the business days calculator.

The 10 federal general holidays are New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Family Day is not on the federal list.
When a federal holiday falls on a weekend: if New Year’s Day, Canada Day, September 30, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday that is not a scheduled work day, the employee gets a paid holiday on the scheduled work day immediately before or after it. The tables show the next working day, which is what most Monday-to-Friday workplaces use. For example, Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so the days off move to Monday and Tuesday, December 27 and 28, 2027. Under the federal Holidays Act, when July 1 is a Sunday, Canada Day is Monday, July 2.
Counting these days off, a federally regulated Monday-to-Friday workplace has 251 business days in 2026 and 251 in 2027.
Federal holiday pay
- Day off: for most employees, holiday pay is at least 1/20 of the wages (not counting overtime) earned in the 4 weeks before the week of the holiday.
- Working on the holiday: at least 1.5 times the regular rate for the hours worked, plus the holiday pay for that day.
- Managers and professionals who work on a holiday get their regular pay and a paid holiday at another time.

Is September 30 a stat holiday?
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation has been a federal general holiday since 2021. It is also a stat holiday under provincial or territorial law in British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It is not a stat holiday under the employment standards laws of Alberta (where it is optional), Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador; in those places only federally regulated workers get it as a paid holiday, unless their employer or contract gives it. The next September 30 is .
Are banks closed on stat holidays in Canada?
Banks are federally regulated, so bank employees get the 10 federal general holidays. Separately, the Bills of Exchange Act (section 42) sets the “non-juridical days” for cheques and other bills: Sundays, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, September 30, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, days proclaimed as public holidays (Thanksgiving is set this way), and days that a province makes non-juridical by its own law. When a bill falls due on one of those days, it is due the next day that isn’t.
In practice, bank branches generally close on the federal holidays. On provincial-only holidays such as Family Day, B.C. Day, Heritage Day or the Civic Holiday, and on Easter Monday, hours vary by bank and by province. Neither law sets branch opening hours, so check your own bank before you go. Online banking usually stays available, but a payment sent on a holiday may not be processed until the next business day.
