When a stat falls on a weekend: B.C. law does not move the holiday to a weekday. Christmas Day 2027 falls on a Saturday, and the province lists it as Saturday, December 25, so that is the date in the table above. Monday, December 27 is listed separately as an optional day: many offices that close on weekdays give it off, but that is a common practice, not a legal rule, and the business-day counts below treat it as a working day. Under the Act, an eligible employee whose regular day off falls on a stat gets an average day’s pay; the employer does not have to give another day off. The only exception written into the definition is Canada Day: when July 1 is a Sunday, Monday, July 2 is Canada Day.

Counting the 11 stats on their actual dates, B.C. has 250 business days (Monday to Friday) in 2026 and 251 in 2027.

How many stat holidays are there in BC?

Eleven: New Year’s Day, Family Day (third Monday in February), Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, B.C. Day (first Monday in August), Labour Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), Thanksgiving (second Monday in October), Remembrance Day (November 11) and Christmas Day.

  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation became a B.C. statutory holiday in 2023. It was already a federal holiday from 2021, so federally regulated workers had it first.
  • Remembrance Day is a full stat holiday in B.C., unlike Ontario, where it is not a public holiday under the ESA.
  • Family Day is the third Monday in February, the same day as in Ontario and Alberta.
  • Not stats in B.C.: Easter Sunday, Easter Monday and Boxing Day (December 26). Many employers give Boxing Day off anyway, but there is no stat pay requirement.

Who gets stat holiday pay in BC

To qualify, an employee must:

  • have been employed for 30 calendar days before the stat holiday, and
  • have worked or earned wages on at least 15 of the 30 days before it. Paid vacation days and other paid stat holidays count as days with wages.

Working the day before and the day after the holiday is not a requirement in B.C. Some groups are excluded from stat pay by regulation, including managers, high technology professionals, farm workers and fishers. Employees who don’t qualify are paid their regular wages if they work on the stat.

How BC stat holiday pay is calculated

Stat holiday pay is an average day’s pay: the wages earned in the 30 calendar days before the holiday, divided by the number of days worked or paid in that period. Regular wages, salary, commission, vacation pay, stat holiday pay and required paid sick days count; overtime does not.

SituationWhat an eligible employee gets
Day off on the statAn average day’s pay
Stat falls on a regular day offAn average day’s pay; no extra day off is required
Works on the statAn average day’s pay, plus 1.5 times regular wages for hours worked, and double time for hours over 12
Written agreement to substitute another dayThe substitute day is treated exactly like the stat holiday
Example from the province: with an average day’s pay of $150, an employee who works 7 hours on the stat gets $150 plus time and a half for the 7 hours.
